Katerina Christidi is a Greek artist based in Paris, France. Her practice is concentrated primarily in charcoal drawing. Christidi uses charcoal in an overtly painterly manner, repeatedly adding the material in series of layered vertical lines, until various shapes slowly emerge from the surface of the canvas. Throughout this process, Christidi seeks to harness the tension that lies between figuration, abstraction and the palpable materiality that occupies the pictorial space. While the work is not autobiographical, Christidi draws on everyday experiences and observations to create distinct works that capture a strange and whimsical vision of the world. Katerina Christidi holds a BFA from Fine Art School of Aristotelian University, Greece. She is represented by the Ileana Tounta gallery in Athens, Greece. Her work has been exhibited in venues internationally, including the French General Consulate in New York; the Undercurrent gallery (Virtual show) New York; Centre d’Arts Plastiques d’Aubervilliers CAPA, France; FRAC Auvergne, France; Space 52, Athens; Domaine de Kerguhennec Brittany, France; 4th Athens Biennial; Onassis Cultural Center, Athens; Le 19 Contemporary Art Center, France; 50-1 gallery Limassol, Cyprus; State Museum of Contemporary Art, Thessaloniki, Greece; 798 Art Center Beijing, China; National Museum of Contemporary Art EMST, Athens; Old Arsakeion School Patras, Cultural Capital of Europe, Greece, among others.
