Brown Orchard (after Munch)

Jane McKenzie (American-Canadian, b. 1972) is a painter and writer based in Montreal, Quebec. With an eye for the uncanny, she paints landscapes as psychic terrains. Her process is rooted in years of nocturnal plein air painting in her urban backyard, where darkness turned familiar spaces into unruly threshold shapes. A recent series riffs on Munch's Girls Picking Fruit. Are the figures reaching or falling, transcending or fleeing? Is there danger in the gestures, grief, desire? A resistance to fixed meaning is at the heart of her sensibility. McKenzie holds an MFA from Syracuse University and a BFA from the University of Montana.
