Matt Jones (b. 1980, Rochester, New York) is an artist based in New York City. His paintings and drawings explore looking as a sustained act of attention. Working through an iterative alphabet of forms—eyes, suns, mushrooms, insects, hands, and tree rings—Jones develops images that serve as concentrations of feeling, thought, and touch. Jones received a BFA from Cooper Union and an MFA from Hunter College. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including solo exhibitions at Studio e, Seattle; Jérôme Pauchant, Paris; Freight & Volume, New York; as well as group exhibitions at the Maine Jewish Museum, Portland: Hosfelt Gallery, San Francisco; Soy Capitán, Berlin; and other venues. In addition to his studio practice, he is the founder and editor of Gideon’s Bakery, an ongoing interview platform dedicated to conversations with contemporary painters.
