Two Figures (or a double)

Saira McLaren (b. Toronto, Canada) is a painter based in the Catskills, New York, who works from found images. Her recent paintings draw from historical photographs of séances, spiritualist gatherings, and psychic mediums. She is interested in the overlap of performance, illusion, and belief, and in the ways images shape our understanding of what is real. Her work has been exhibited at Sargent’s Daughters, Essex Flowers, Bushel, and 56 Henry, and has been featured in Artforum, the New York Times, and New American Paintings. She has participated in residencies and fellowship programs at the Edward Albee Foundation, Dieu Donné, and the Center for Contemporary Printmaking.
