In 1994 Carr earned her BFA from the dual degree program at The School of The Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, Boston, Massachusetts (SMFA), and was awarded the prestigious fifth year “Traveling scholars award” in 1995. Carr returned to SMFA, after some time off, to achieve an MFA in video and photography. During her last year at SMFA, Carr spent a semester at Radcliffe in an acedemic cross-cultural program. At the time that Carr was attending school, she was also a single mother of three commuting every day from Cape Cod to Boston.
Susan Carr’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad including: Phillips Art Auctions, NYC; La Luz De Jesus, Los Angeles; Next to Nothing Gallery, NYC; Borghi Gallery solo in Sag Harbor and a group show in NYC; Andrew Edlin, NYC; Cedar Crest College, Pennsylvania; Elaine Jacobs Gallery, Wayne State University, Detroit; Tinimini Room, Amsterdam; La Grange Gallery, France; and a yearly solo at Labspace in upstate New York. Susan Carr is featured in private and public collections around the world. She has been awarded grants from The Massachusetts cultural council and other local groups.
Carr lives and works in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where she paints in her basement and does ceramics at her kitchen table. Her children have all grown, so her home is a studio now. She creates paintings, sculptures, ceramics, soft sculptures from fabric and everything in between, all characterized by her love of color, quirky style and thick chunky paint. Carr works on several series at once, as she sees her art as stories she is writing, in whatever medium speaks to her at the time. Carr’s art comes from a deep and highly intuitive place always guided by her vibrant curiosity.
