Craig Coulthard (Scottish, born 1981 in Germany) is a painter and musician resident in Manchester, England. His work is primarily concerned with our relationship to our surrounding environments, how we traverse them and interpret them through both creative and destructive means. This commonly involves an excavation of the disparate strata of cultural production - for example indigenous architecture, folksong and ancient art, to printmaking, museum collections and renaissance painting - to create unified collages of surrealist elements that exist somewhere between diagrams and dreams.
Craig graduated with an MFA from Edinburgh College of Art, the city where he co-founded the artist-run gallery The Embassy in 2003. He has exhibited throughout Europe, and has represented Scotland as their artist for the Cultural Olympiad as part of the London 2012 Olympic Games, with the large-scale multi-disciplinary artwork Forest Pitch.
